Child Badly Burned After Playing with Lighter

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - A Carlsbad boy is being treated at a burn center in Lubbock, Texas, after his mother found him on fire inside a bedroom closet.

Investigators think 6-year-old Zachery Pope and his 4-year-old brother had been playing with a lighter when they started a fire Thursday inside their home. The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports fire crews arrived and found the boy lying outside the home with severe burns over most of his body.

The child was taken to the Carlsbad Medical Center and then flown to the University Medical Center burn treatment center in Lubbock.

Authorities say the boy's mother, 32-year-old Jamie Pope, was also treated for burns to her hands and forearms. Fire officials say the younger boy was not injured. The fire remains under investigation.
