BIG SPRING - On Tuesday, the Big Spring City Council approved the city's portion of funding for grant monies to make additional improvements to the Big Spring Airport.
Last year, the city applied similar grant monies from the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration to upgrade the runway at Big Spring Airpark to accommodate large aircraft. But the air terminal apron is still not up to those same standards.
A 90/10 grant will now pay for that upgrade with a total cost estimated at $445,000, with the city putting up about $44,500 for the project, which will basically "harden" the apron surface near the air terminal.
