The federal government is taking steps to protect a lizard that calls West Texas home.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to protect the dunes sagebrush lizard by placing it on the endangered species list.

The lizard can be found in the sandy dunes of the Permian Basin and Southeast New Mexico.

The lizard is threatened by oil and gas development, the removal of native vegetation and the creation of roads, pipelines and power lines.
