It's officially the first day of winter and the day was marked with a total lunar eclipse.

The eclipse was visible for much of the country early Tuesday morning, and lasted for about three and a half hours. Tuesday's eclipse is historically significant because it's the first time since 1638 that a total lunar eclipse has occurred on the winter solstice.

Astronomers say the next time the two will happen on the same day is December 21st, 2094.
