ECTOR COUNTY - New information on a massive grassfire in Ector County. The fire is finally out but crews are still keeping an eye out for hot spots.

About 1,000 people were evacuated after the flames crept dangerously close to a neighborhood.

The Red Cross tells NewsWest 9, those residents are back home.

The flames broke out just after two Wednesday afternoon near I-20 and Grant.

The billowing black smoke could be seen for miles.

Fire officials didn't take any chances with the fast moving flames.

People living in the south Ranchito neighborhood were evacuated.

They were put up in a temporary Red Cross shelter at Blackshear Elementary in Odessa.

While the fire didn't damage any homes, it did tear through a vacant building near the Flint Hills Plant.

It also threatened a Church under construction.

Finally around 7 p.m. Wednesday night, crews were able to gain the upper hand.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, all of the roads are back open except for the service road of I-20 between Grant and Grandview.
