MIDLAND--A Midland Lee High School teacher is on paid administrative leave after admitting to having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student.
He was caught by accident as police were checking out a call about a car with it's lights off and that's when they busted him.
22-year-old Ruben Roy Rodriguez wasn't the only one in that parked car. A 16-year-old female student was with him.
The call came in on Saturday night from a residential area in central Midland. When police arrived, they found Rodriguez and the girl inside.
The investigation led Police to discover she was a student at Lee High school where Rodriguez teaches.
Police say Rodriguez cooperated fully during the investigation and admitted that an inappropriate relationship had taken place in the car, before they got there.
Midland Police say, in cases like this, an inappropriate relationship can take many forms.
"The officer that arrived at the scene was able to observe activity that led him to believe there was an inappropriate situation at that point. You have an educator, teacher, that's involved with a minor student, under the age of 17. Sexual contact consists of over the clothing or under the clothing. Either way, it doesn't matter," Lt. Tony Dickie, said.
Police could not say if the relationship was consensual. Rodriguez is out of jail on a $35,000 bond. If convicted, he faces between 2 to 20 years in prison and a 10 thousand dollar fine.
MISD would not comment, other than to say Rodriguez was placed on paid administrative leave, as soon as they found out about the arrest.
