Man Arrested for Allegedly Hitting and Killing Carlsbad Mother

CARLSBAD, N.M. - A man accused of hitting and killing a young mother in Carlsbad on Halloween has been caught.

Police arrested 38-year-old Gilbert Melendrez, Junior.

He's accused of hitting and killing Leora Jean Dyess then fleeing the scene.

Dyess was trick or treating with nine kids, including her own, when the hit and run happened.

Police say Dyess pushed four of the children out of the way of the truck before being hit.

Witnesses at the scene identified Melendrez's truck.

He faces several charges including homicide by a motor vehicle, child abuse and driving on a revoked license.
