To keep the cost of capital murder trials down, Howard County leaders want to renew their deal with a consortium out of Lubbock.
Murder trials with the death penalty on the line can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Those trials may be extremely rare in Howard County but it's coverage the Commissioners want in the event they need it.
Right now they pay a fee to a consortium that covers the cost of that trial but that fee is going up.
Commissioners are studying the cost-benefits before they decide whether or not to renew.
Howard County only sees about one capital murder trial every ten years.
