MIDLAND - It's estimated that every 16 minutes someone takes their life. Saturday, a group of Midlanders came out to Midland College to offer support for suicide prevention, something that is hitting close to home here in the basin.
Reports indicate the number of suicides here in West Texas has significantly risen this year. The "Out of the Darkness Walk" is hosted by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention.
Saturday morning, participants walked around the college raising money for our local organizations. Organizers of the event say talking about suicide prevention is making a huge difference.
"By opening a conversation you again have the opportunity to provide resources, to listen, to direct that person and to make sure that they're safe," walk organizer Maura Callendar said.
