MIDLAND COUNTY - An area of Midland County with contaminated groundwater has been targeted by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The agency wants to add it to their list of superfund sites.
That list is made up of sites so contaminated that they require long-term, complex and expensive cleanups.
The area in Midland is near Cotton Flat Road.
The groundwater and some wells are contaminated with hexavalent chromium.
That's a man-made form of chromium that has a variety of industrial uses.
The EPS doesn't know where the contamination came from.
A group, lead by environmentalist Erin Brockovich, is investigating the Midland case.
Brockovich became well known after Julia Roberts played her in a movie about a community sickened by contaminated water.
