Two Killed in Early Morning Crash in Midland

MIDLAND - Two people are dead, and a man is in jail after an early morning crash. It happened around 12:40 Tuesday morning on Highway 191 just west of Deauville Boulevard in Midland.

Police say a white 2009 Cadillac, driven by 22-year-old Joel Tavarez of Odessa, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of 191 when he struck a 1993 Ford Taurus driven by 21-year-old Jenna Vela of Midland.

Vela, and the front passenger, 23-year-old Jeffery Perry of Midland died at the scene. Two girls, both around two years old, were in the back seat of the vehicle. They were taken to Midland Memorial in critical condition, then airlifted to a Lubbock hospital.

Another vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo, was also struck in the crash. Two people in that car were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Joel Tavarez was taken to Midland Memorial where he was treated and released. He was then arrested and charged with two counts of Intoxication Manslaughter and two counts of Intoxication Assault with Serious Bodily Injuries.

Police believe Tavarez was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He is currently being held at the Midland County Detention Center.
