BIG SPRING -  The United Way for Big Spring and Howard County kicked off the 65th campaign year with a bang.

This year's United Way President Eve Nieto announced during the kick off luncheon Thursday that the united way golf tournament held earlier in the year had gone well and allowed United Way to hand out "bonus checks" to each of the 14 agencies that benefit locally from United Way.

Representatives from each organization were called to the front of the room at Garrett Hall Thursday and United Way Executive Director Jennie Coor handed each their share of $30,000.   Coors says it's an exciting way to begin this year's campaign.
The goal this year is $250,000. Campaign Chair this year is Wayland Pierce.
Jim Baum was the special guest speaker for the kick off luncheon Thursday. He had several colorful stories from his days in Big Spring. Baum had a colorful life of his own as mayor of Colorado City for many years, author of four books, a stint as a professional baseball player, politics, and a rich history in radio in Big Spring and Colorado City.

Jim baum was appropriately introduced by friend Tumbleweed Smith.
