KERMIT - A former Kermit Police Officer is in big trouble.

Kermit Police Chief Scott Williams tells NewsWest 9 that James Slayton was arrested on Wednesday by Texas Rangers.

He's charged with official oppression, which means he allegedly abused his power.

Slayton resigned from the Kermit Police Department after he became the target of a Texas Ranger investigation earlier this year.

Officials continue to be tight-lipped about exactly what Slayton is accused of doing.

Right now, Slayton is in the process of bonding out of jail in Kermit.
His bond was set at $500.00.
