Sul Ross Could Control Christmas Mountains

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson has floated the idea to shift control of the state-owned Christmas Mountains to Sul Ross State University.

Patterson says the subject of control of the 9,269 -acre tract, adjacent to Big Bend National Park, came up this summer as he spoke with state Rep. Pete Gallego of Alpine, where the school is based.

Patterson, in an interview with the Austin American-Statesman, says nothing has been formally proposed.

University officials say they have not been asked to consult on any transfer.

The Christmas Mountains tract was donated to the state by a conservation group in 1991.

Enrollment at Sul Ross State, which has a natural resource management department, was about 2,000 during 2009.
