MIDLAND - New details in the explosion that injured a Midland Police Sergeant.

Sergeant Brian Rackow lost his hand while trying to dismantle an explosive back on June 24th.

The Lubbock division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives determined it was caused by friction.

They say Rackow was removing metal parts from the oilfield charges to make them less dangerous, so they could be used for training.

After the bomb went off, Rackow was taken to Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock in critical condition. He was treated and released earlier this month, and is now back home in Midland.

The Midland Police Department's internal investigation is ongoing.

They're trying to determine if all procedures were followed and if any procedural changes are needed.
