Man Hit by Semi While Fleeing Hobbs Police

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a Hobbs man trying to flee from police is hospitalized after being hit by a semi-truck.

Police say an officer spotted 24-year-old Justin Heckard behind the wheel of a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon even though his New Mexico driver's license is suspended.

The officer pulled over Heckard in a convenience store parking lot and learned that Heckard may have had marijuana in his possession.

Police say Heckard ran from the officer out onto Dal Paso street where he was hit by the rear wheels of a semi-truck pulling a tanker trailer.

Police say Heckard is being treated at Lea Regional Hospital for undisclosed injuries and criminal charges are pending against him.
