MIDLAND COUNTY - Tense moments in a Midland County neighborhood after the SWAT team was called out when a man accused of hitting his elderly mother refused to come out of his home.
Deputies surrounded the house on South County Road 1312 around 5:00p.m. Tuesday evening.
This all started when neighbors called 911 saying 46-year-old James Vernon Smith was hitting his mother.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they could not establish contact with the man and they were also told that he had numerous weapons.
After about an hour, the SWAT Team moved in and found him hiding behind a shed in the back yard.
Smith was arrested and booked into the Midland County Jail. Smith has been charged with aggravated assault.
Sheriff's officials also said that Smith was intoxicated at the time.
His mother suffered cuts and bruises, but his expected to be ok.
