BIG SPRING - A Big Spring firefighter serves as an example that anything is possible. Everyday she risks her life to help others, but these days, her job is a little bit harder.

For six years, Birdie Soto has been a firefighter at Station 4 in Big Spring.

"About two years ago, I got promoted as the driver on engine 4, taking care of the truck," Soto said.

At first glance, she looks like any other firefighter, but Birdie is 8 and a half months pregnant.

"I didn't think I can do the job and be pregnant, but finally I found out if I can," Soto said. "I came in and showed them that I could do my job, that's all they wanted to see and I did."

She does have some limitations, like no heavy lifting, but she's happy to be doing what she can.

"They've been making sure I don't get in any situation and harm myself or the baby," Soto said.

Birdie is due on July 14 and plans to work until the very last minute.
