GAINES COUNTY - Major upgrades underway at Gaines County buildings.
Right now, crews are making the aging facilities more energy efficient.
They're installing new lights, thermostats and cost-saving windows.
That phase, totaling almost one million dollars, is expected to be completed by July.
Next, they'll start renovations on the courthouse.
Crews will replace the sprinkler system, which will bring the building up to fire codes.
They'll also get new plumbing, electrical and ventilation systems.
All of that adds up to almost 8 million dollars.
Even so, Gaines County officials tell NewsWest 9, they won't go into debt to pay for it.
The projects should be finished by September.
