Memorial Day with the CAF & Midland Rockhounds

MIDLAND, TEXAS (May 25, 2010) – This Memorial Day, Mon., May 31, 2010, join the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) for a celebration honoring those who fought for our freedom. This FREE event will be held at the CAF at 9600 Wright Drive at Midland International Airport.
Start your day at 11:15 a.m. at the CAF where your family can enjoy traditional ceremonies, Open Cockpit Day, FREE admission to the CAF Airpower Museum and fantastic activities! While you're at the CAF, pick up vouchers that can be exchanged at the Midland Rockhounds Box Office for $2 tickets to the Memorial Day baseball game at 4 p.m.
The annual Memorial Day Celebration will include a flag ceremony, guest speaker Congressman Mike Conaway, the induction of eight of the Texas Medal of Honor recipients and patriotic music by the Sun Country Gentlemen, the Permian Basin's own barbershop harmony chorus. Attendees can also enjoy a flyover by CAF aircraft. Lunch can be purchased in the Commemorative Center hangar from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $10 per plate. Each lunch plate purchased automatically enters you to win a free ride in a warbird courtesy of the CAF High Sky Wing. Children ages eight (8) and under can enjoy FREE hotdogs!
Following the ceremonies, enjoy face painting with Greenie the Clown and balloon fun with Harlan the Balloon Guy. Adults and children alike can climb inside authentic warbirds and get an idea of what the men and women of our American Military may have felt as they flew missions to protect our freedoms during Open Cockpit Day, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Also on display at the CAF, will be a Chaparral race car from the Petroleum Museum's Chaparral Gallery. Enjoy a unique array of privately-owned antique cars from the West Texas Cruisers, Permian Basin Corvette Club and the West Texas Region Antique Automobile Club of America on display as well!
Other fun, family entertainment includes World War II re-enactors and the chance to have your picture taken in authentic military uniforms. Warbird rides will be available for purchase in some of the CAF Warbirds. Rides are limited and subject to weather.
The George H.W. and Barbara Bush Commemorative Center is home to the state's largest Medal of Honor memorial. The Texas Medal of Honor Memorial recognizes the valor of Texans who earned the highest military decoration awarded by the United States for service and bravery above and beyond the call of duty. Each year, the Commemorative Air Force will induct eight Medal of Honor recipients until all 84 of the Texas recipients have been recognized.
This Memorial Day, the CAF will honor U.S. Navy Cmdr. William K. Harrison, U.S. Army Col. Neel E. Kerby, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Turney W. Leonard, U.S. Army Spc. 4th Class Robert D. Law, U.S. Air Force Maj. George Andrew Davis, Jr., U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Audie L. Murphy, U.S. Army Pvt. George M. Shelton and U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Robert L. Howze, by inducting them into the CAF's Texas Medal of Honor Memorial. (Biographies are attached)
Collecting, restoring and flying vintage historical aircraft for more than half a century, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) ranks as one of the largest private air forces in the world.
