CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK - The fight continues to put out several fires near Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Now that fight seems far from over as more than 8,000 acres have burned.

For now, parts of the park will remain closed.

This weekend, more firefighters and personnel were brought in to battle the blazes which resulted from lightning from a storm one week ago.

Fire officials have let some of it burn, but strong winds and dry conditions this weekend pushed the flames closer to the park's boundary.

As a precaution, park officials in Carlsbad have closed off the Loop Road and all back county hiking trails.

Some tours have been canceled, but the main cave and visitor center remains open.
