Two Arrested in Connection with Child's Death in Hobbs

HOBBS - Two Hobbs residents are behind bars after a baby died Friday morning.

Police responded to the 400 block of West Alston around 6:00 a.m. Friday after receiving a 911 call that a 21-month-old child was not breathing. By the time Hobbs EMS and police arrived at the home, the baby was dead.

An investigation revealed that the child had been abused prior to dying. 27-year-old Christopher Elliot and the child's mother, 21-year-old Miranda Copeland were arrested.

Both were charged with Abandonment or Abuse of a Child Resulting in Death. They were also charged with Abandonment or Abuse of a Child for abuse to another one of Copeland's children who is 3-years-old.

Both are being held in the Hobbs City Jail.
