Presidio County Jail Closer to Reopening

PRESIDIO - Officials in Presidio County are waiting for the green light to open their jail.

The future of the jail was uncertain last year after parent company Emerald backed out on the contract. All the repairs needed to bring the 112 bed facility up to code have been done.

The jail passed an inspection by the U.S. Marshal's Office and the Bureau of Prisons in March. Now, it's up to state inspectors to give their okay.

The county attorney says they are currently requesting that inspection. Even with state approval, the jail won't be able to operate until after October 1st, the start of the new budget year.
