ODESSA - Caught in the line of fire, an elderly Odessa woman barely escapes with her life.

She was sitting outside of a friend's home Sunday evening when someone opened fire, hitting her several times. On Monday, her family was still afraid the shooter could strike again.

"She's got three in her leg and two in her side," Cecelia Edwards said. "She was shot a total of five times."

Edwards couldn't believe someone shot her 78-year-old mother Juanita Canady Sunday.

"I got hysterical," she said. "(I) started running and screaming, but I had to be calm for her because she was one who was hurt."

Family and friends were trying to enjoy their Sunday evening when all of a sudden they heard shots. The elderly woman was hit while she was sitting down about to eat a salad.

Even after she was shot, Canady protected her friends by shielding them from the gunfire.

"Actually she saved my life and my nephew's life," Homeowner, Lucille Christian said. "She actually saved our lives."

Christian says she doesn't want to show her face on camera as she fears the shooter may come back.

"I don't want to stay in my house," Christian said. "Oh no, I'm not going to stay in there until all of this is over with. I'm going to tell you it's nerve wracking. It's scary to know someone shot up at your house and you don't know who it was."

She isn't the only one scared.

"The elderly people aren't even safe any on the street anymore," Edwards said. "From drive by shootings anything can happen and they've been living here for years. So, I think the police and a patrol unit should come through and clean the streets up. That's the only way it's going to be safe."

In the meantime, Edwards says her mom is doing better, but she still has to see a doctor for her injuries.

"She's a little sore, a little stiff, but she's going to pull through," Edwards said.

Police are still searching for the shooter as well as another man who may be involved.

The suspect is described as a bald Black male about 5'8" and 200 pounds. He was last seen fleeing the scene on foot wearing a white T-shirt and dark jeans.

The other suspect is a Black male in his early 20's. Witnesses say he fled the scene in a - gold or tan Chevy Trailblazer.

If you have any information on the shooting, call police or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 333-TIPS.
