AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - A West Texas man is going to federal prison for 14 years for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend last year and taking her to New Mexico.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson sentenced 58-year-old Ronnie Joe Stowers in Amarillo on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty in December.

According to court documents, Stowers kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in October by ramming her car, forcing her off the road and dragging her from the vehicle.

The 54-year-old woman from Castro County twice jumped from his moving pickup in Texas an attempt to escape.

A day later near Lovington, N.M., Stowers gave her his cell phone and told her to drive away and call 911.

As she drove away, Stowers shot himself in the chest with his shotgun.
