BIG SPRING - A big fundraiser for the Big Spring State Hospital. For three years, they've been raising money to build a family visitor center at the hospital.
They hope this year; they'll have all the money they need to make it happen.
Hospital officials say the new visitor center is critical to both the patients and their families.
"We have approximately 40-60 patients on a unit and nowhere for families just to be able to privately visit with their loved ones," Billie Christie with the Big Spring State Hospital, said.
The hospital is trying to raise enough money to build two visitation centers so families can have some alone time with patients.
"The total cost of each of them is estimated at $259,000," Christie said.
"This is the third year we have been working on this, so hopefully this year we will be able to start with the first one," Christie said.
The Volunteer Services Department is holding another fundraiser for the project.
They've donated many other buildings to the hospital and although this project is local, they still have to get the approval from Austin.
"We are in the final leg of getting that approval now and then volunteers will actually pay for the structure and contractors will come and build it," Christie said.
The volunteers hope to raise $45,000 from the fundraiser being held on April 17th, they hope to get the remaining $90,000 that they need from donations and grants.
