ODESSA--If you drive along 42nd Street during the early evening hours in Odessa, no doubt you've seen them flying overhead and filling up the high line wires.

The grackles are back and there are more of them than ever.  The birds are so bad, local business owners have asked the Texas Wildlife Services to step in again.

Odessa Animal Control and Texas Wildlife Services are joining forces to try and make a dent in the current grackle population, numbers they say, are in the thousands.

This is not the first time these two groups have gotten together on this project.  They have actually done this 4 or 5 times before.

Animal Control officials have been baiting specific areas near Music City Mall, where the birds tend to feed.

Starting Monday, those baits have been loaded with poison.  The grackles will go feed, take the poison, and then fly back to roost.  Officials say, this is the most humane way to control the growing bird population, a request that came from local business owners, like the Music City Mall.

Officials want to warn everyone, that starting as early as Tuesday morning, a large number of birds could start dropping, that means you will start seeing a lot of dead birds, especially in and around the mall area.

Odessa Animal Control will be going around collecting the dead birds over the next few days.  If you see or have some on your property, don't pick them up yourself.  Call Animal Control at 368-3526 to schedule a pick-up.
