MIDLAND - The multiple break-ins across Midland has lead one local karate teacher to offer free self-defense classes.

On Wednesday, instructor Sergio Menchaca opened his doors to the public to teach several different ways you can protect yourself. Menchaca told NewsWest 9, he saw our report earlier this week about the search for the suspects who have been kicking-in front doors. He said his classes will teach people basic self-defense anyone can learn.

"It has to be fast, and it has to be natural movements," Menchaca explained. "People aren't trained to do that or think that way, so you have to make safe decisions, and you have to know what to strike with. You want an easy, natural motion like when I'm walking, I'm making natural motions. So, that's the kind of striking you are going to do automatically."

If you are interested in learning how to protect yourself, and missed Wednesday's class, you still have two other chances. He'll hold the class from 7 to 8pm for the next two Wednesdays.

For more information, you can contact Sergio Menchaca at the Karate Dojo on North Midkiff at 638-4869.
