ODESSA - A $2 billion plant is one step closer to moving into the Basin and bringing with it a pack of new jobs. On Monday afternoon, the Odessa Development Corporation gave a thumbs-up to an agreement to fuel a new plant in Odessa.
The Odessa Development Corporation told us this is the biggest professional event Ector County has ever seen. Monday afternoon, they decided to award $5 million and about 600 acres on the old FutureGen site in Penwell to the Summit Clean Energy company.
The plant will capture 90 percent of it's carbon dioxide to be used in enhanced oil recovery.
Odessa Economic Development says the clean coal plant will bring in over 1,000 construction jobs and about 150 permanent positions.
Odessa is waiting on word from Summit Energy.
If they accept the agreement construction would start this coming December and be fully operational by about 2014. The Odessa Development Corporation hopes to have their answer by the end of this week.
