CARLSBAD, NEW MEXICO - A Carlsbad woman has pleaded not guilty to a charge of embezzling money from her employer.

The Manager of United Fuel and Energy Truck Stop told Police she believed 59-year-old Arminda "Cookie" Mayo was taking money from the business.

The Manager says she allowed Mayo to take deposits from the business to the bank.

She told Police she found several bank deposit slips that had not been signed by the bank, indicating the deposits were never made.

Carlsbad Police say Mayo told them that she took about $2,500, because she does not make much at the truck stop and needed it for medicine for a serious illness.
