LOVINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Dozens of firefighters battled strong winds to contain a large grass fire that had forced the brief evacuation of 7 homes north of Lovington.

State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says crews stopped the forward progress of the fire and declared it fully contained Wednesday evening. The blaze was at least 10 miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide.

Ware said a hay barn was destroyed by the fire.

About 150 firefighters, 30 engines and several water tenders battled the flames. Ware said crews will continue to watch for hot spots overnight.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
