MARTIN COUNTY - More than a dozen dog roam around the property surrounded by old mattresses and couches, and for landowner Kathy Cogdill it's becoming too much to bear.
"It's getting really old and very tiring, I'll be responsible for the cleaning of the trash," Landowner Kathy Cogdill said.
Cogdill has been leasing out her land to Margaret Brown, but she claims Brown hasn't been keeping the property clean and instead been using the property to house a large population of stray dogs, Cogdill says that's where the problem began.
"She thinks she's being evicted because of how many dogs, but it's for lack of maintaining property, the things that have piled up, couches, mattresses, deceased dogs; It's unhealthy," Cogdill said.
Brown had until close of business day on Tuesday to appeal to court, and if she doesn't Cogdill will then have the right to every dog that's left on her property, but she says finding homes for most of them will be a challenge in itself.
"We will try to find homes for these dogs, but you have to have a huge heart to care for one of them, some have fleas, skin disease, and most of them don't know what it's like to be around people," Cogdill said.
Cogdill says at this point evicting Brown from her property was the only right thing to do.
"I'm sorry it has to come to this, but it just continues to get worse. It's got to come to an end and for the animals sake they need a better environment," Cogdill said.
Cogdill says she is currently looking for an animal rescue organization that is willing to take in all of the dogs.
