GARDENDALE - A man who was wanted for stabbing his common-law wife and her son has been arrested in Gardendale.
Ector County authorities arrested 32-year-old Kenny Lee Thompson about 1:00 p.m. at a home on Marigold. NewsWest9 was the only station on the scene as he was being arrested. Residents in the area alerted officers to his whereabouts.
The hunt for Thompson started about 7:00 Tuesday morning. The Ector County Sheriff's Office says Kenny Lee Thompson dragged his 25-year-old common law wife out of bed, took her to the living room and began beating her. He then stabbed her numerous times.
Her 7-year-old son ran to help his mom and then he was also stabbed in the left forearm.
The woman told officers that Thompson then cut his own wrist and ran out the door.
The woman and her son were transported to Medical Center Hospital for stab wounds. The mother is currently in surgery and her condition is unknown.
Two younger children were also at the residence at the time, but were not harmed and are staying with friends.
ECISD says Barbara Jordan Elementary sheltered-in-place for about 25 minutes while authorities searched for Thompson.
Shelter-in-place means all external doors to the school are locked, but inside classes continue as normal. The shelter-in-place was lifted just after 1:00 p.m.
