EUNICE, N.M. (AP) - Assistant Chief David Walser will lead the embattled Eunice Fire Department while city officials continue a search to fill the job.
City Manager Curtis Schrader has approved Walser's nomination as interim chief.
A selection committee has been formed to help Schrader review resumes and interview candidates for the chief's job. Although the city manager has authority to hire a fire chief, Schrader says he wants to involve fire department employees and volunteers.
Eunice has been without a full-time fire chief since Ron Grogan was fired Dec. 29.
Grogan and five firefighters are accused in the theft of a radar detector from a wrecked vehicle at an accident scene. Grogan also was cleared by a state hearing officer of sexual misconduct
allegations stemming from an ambulance run in May.
