Group Threatens Lawsuit After Petition Found Invalid

BIG SPRING - A citizens group in Big Spring is threatening to sue the city after the City Council found a tax rollback petition was invalid.

The Concerned Citizens of Big Spring had circulated a petition around town calling for a tax roll back election. The Big Spring City Council voted back in September to raise taxes to build a new pool, but the Concerned Citizens want the issue to got to a vote.

The City Council had 20 days to take up the petition, and with just one day left, found that it was invalid. The petition did only have one name on it because not enough signatures were raised to call for the election.

"We're going to be looking at filing litigation to have this city council vacated and any action taken at this meeting will be void," Shannon Thomason, who organized the group, said.

Thomason and his group argue that an emergency meeting called Wednesday night did not meet state law. Big Spring leaders would not discuss the issue with NewsWest9 because of the possible lawsuit.
