Carlsbad Man Arrested for Manslaughter

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a Carlsbad man is facing a felony manslaughter charge in the death of another city resident more than three years ago.

Carlsbad police say 28-year-old Juan Garza was arrested last week in the June 2006 death of Jerry Sapien following an altercation at Garza's home.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Carlsbad Magistrate Court, police received a 911 call from the Garza residence about midnight on June 19, 2006, about a 30-year-old man who was semi-conscious and bleeding from a head wound.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and took Sapien to Carlsbad Medical Center for treatment. He was later airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, due to the severity of his injuries and died four days later.
