MIDLAND - Midland Police are hot on the trail of some bogus check writers who use fake accounts to get real cold hard cash, and local businesses are paying the price.

"We lost about $5,000 on this, but hopefully no more," Kokes Bernal with Super Mercado, said.

Super Mercado has been swindled by crooks with fake checks, and MPD investigators say they're not the only ones.

"We've got a surge of people cashing checks with fake accounts; they're going to local businesses with out surveillance cameras," Sgt. Alfredo Grimaldo, with the Midland Police Department, said.

Bernal says this isn't the first time his store has been hit with the fakes.

"We had another individual come in and we caught that too; these guys are crazy putting finger prints on machine and showing ID," Bernal said.

Sgt. Grimaldo is warning businesses to watch out for the type of checks customers come in with especially if it involves large amounts of money.

"These checks look really real. They're made on check stock paper, it just has stolen info and account. It's something that's become easy to do on a home computer," Sgt. Grimaldo said.

Sgt. Grimaldo says the investigation is almost complete, they're currently working on warrants for the alleged check writers involved.

He also says there are no links between each suspect involved in the scams.
