Attorney Plans Insanity Defense for Dwayne Billings

ODESSA - The attorney for an Odessa man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 9-year-old autistic girl says his client was insane at the time of the crime.

David Zavoda, attorney for 24-year-old Dwayne Billings, filed a motion Thursday to change his client's plea to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Zavoda tells NewsWest9 he also dropped a motion to suppress a video-taped interview of Billings that was conducted just after he was arrested in 2007.

Zavoda says the interview shows his client's mental state at the time.

Billings was arrested in January of 2007 after the girl was found in his home. The community launched an extensive search for the girl after she was reported missing.
