MIDLAND - The Midland City Council has approved a new oil ordinance.

Under the ordinance, a driller can not drill a well closer than 500 feet to a home.

An Oil and Gas Advisory Committee was also formed, it's made up of 5 experts who will make recommendations to City Council on oil and gas related issues.

Some people who NewsWest 9 talked to say, they would've liked to have seen a more extensive oil ordinance.

"We believe overall it's a good ordinance. There a few things we would've like to have seen different. We would've like to have seen planning and zoning as a part of the ordinance," Karen York, with the Permian Basin Home Builders Association, said.

The new ordinance will go into effect on January 1st.
