HOBBS, NEW MEXICO - If you want to take a pet home from the Hobbs animal shelter, you might find yourself making a stop in the classroom first.

Commissioners approved a new pet ordinance on Monday night.

Anyone looking to adopt an animal from the shelter will have to go through a pet care training class.

It also requires all pets to be spayed or neutered and anyone who tries to reclaim their pet from the shelter must have their animal fixed, before they can take it home.
