Lea County is mourning the loss of a longtime resident and public servant.

Former New Mexico State Legislator Dan Berry of Eunice died in a car accident north of Hobbs on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say Berry and his wife Jackye were stopped at the intersection of Kansas and Highway 18, north of Hobbs, when they accidentally pulled out in front of oncoming traffic.

Dan was taken to Lea Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

His wife had to be flown to Lubbock where she's suffering from several serious injuries.

Berry served Lea County in a number of ways, but is most well-known for his role as a New Mexico State Representative.

On two occasions, he was invited to the White House by President Ronald Reagan to talk about land problems in the west.

He and his family have ranched in Southeastern New Mexico since the 1930's.
