MIDLAND- A simple solution to credit card debt may be too good to be true, according to Better Business Bureau Director Trish Powell.

"It didn't take you a week to get into debt, it's not going to take a week to get out of debt," Powell explained.

According to Powell, more and more West Texans are finding the solution to credit card debt isn't a quick fix.

"These credit counseling, credit consolidation, or credit repair companies are definitely advertising a lot more, because they know people are out there looking." Powell explained that many companies want money and information up front and don't often live up to the promises made in ads on TV, radio, or over the Internet.

"If you are already in a situation where you need credit card assistance, you don't want to make the mistake of giving that information to a scam artist." Powell explained the damage of handing over personal information.

Powell's advice is to research companies before doing business and she says you can always call the Better Business Bureau.

"There are definitely legitimate credit counseling services and debt negotiations services," Powell said you might to weed out the bad companies.
