MIDLAND - Midland Police are investigating the increasing amount of copper coil thefts out of air conditioning units and numerous cases of copper wiring thefts from construction sites.

"I think a lot of people are out of a job and need a quick buck are turning to this," Sgt. Alfredo Grimaldo with Midland Police Department, said.

The Web site, scraptheftalert.com allows law enforcement to search state by state, case by case.

"They could be just moving throughout the United States and that is when we could rely on this website to report to see if other cities have contact with them," Grimaldo said.

Midland Police are amping up their investigation but they also need the help of recycling centers to catch the culprits.

"Our push right now is for centers to report and monitor the people. Just be aware that somebody in the city could be at a great deal of loss, and we don't want to make it easier on people trying to take advantage of that," Grimaldo said.
