GAINES COUNTY - Tough times for Gaines County neighbors as the tax rate is the hot topic on the Commissioners' Court agenda this week.
Judge Keyes tells NewsWest Nine, they haven't made cuts this deep in more than 20 years.
Values for oil and gas dropped while home and land values shot up.
That means higher taxes for neighbors and cuts for the County.
Officials lowered the effective rate hoping to keep the high taxes down as much as possible for property owners.
And while everyone is paying more, it adds up to a delay on County projects.
Judge Keyes says they'll put a hold on repairing the Courthouse and subtract about one million from the Road and Bridges Department.
Keyes says because of the oil and gas drop, the County lost about one billion in revenue.
