Man Killed in Shoot-out in Eddy County

LOVING, N.M. (AP) - A rural shoot-out has claimed the life of a 58-year-old man from Loving. Eddy County Sheriff Earnest Mendoza identifies him as Rex Cox.

Carlsbad police Cpl. Willie Pierce, who lives near the shootout scene, says his son woke him up Sunday morning to say there was a commotion across the street.

Pierce says that when he arrived, Cox had no pulse.  He says Cox's son-in-law told him the shooter pulled up, asked for car parts and opened fire.

Pierce says the shooter's truck sped off, but crashed. He says a second vehicle picked up those inside the truck and fled.
