MIDLAND - Churches and drugs don't mix, but for one Midland criminal it was that mixture that landed him in jail not once but twice. Midland Police caught the thief several months ago but after bonding out he went right back to the streets and started all over again.
34-year-old George Navarrette is the thief behind a string of 15 Church burglaries NewsWest 9 reported back in May. He paid his bond and hit the streets and churches again mostly in the northwest side of town.
"He was targeting electronics such as TV's, computers, the Wii games," Sgt. Jim Crouse with the Midland Police Department, said.
On Tuesday, Midland Police arrested Navarette for breaking into two churches and they suspect he's behind four more. He didn't cover his tracks very well - the clue came on a piece of glass.
"The identification specialists here at the Police Department were handed a fingerprint that they lifted off a piece of glass there at the Church burglary," Sgt. Crouse said.
But the story doesn't stop there. During their investigation Midland officers got a bonus.
"He would just steal the property then trading for narcotics and we did bust one of the drug dealers he was using frequently," Sgt. Crouse said. "We caught the burglar and another criminal in the dope world."
