CARLSBAD, NEW MEXICO - A Carlsbad man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl.

The case stems from an incident last December when 37-year-old Gary Tesch was accused of engaging in sexual conduct with the daughter of a girlfriend. Authorities said the victim had been left in Tesch's care.

Tesch was convicted earlier this month of felony criminal sexual penetration of a minor. He was also charged with an additional count of criminal sexual contact of a minor. The jury found him not guilty on the second charge.

New Mexico law says first-degree felony is classified as a serious violent offense. Tesch must serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for release.
