Multiple Agencies Investigating Cross Burning in Midland

MIDLAND - Midland Police and fire investigators continue to hunt for suspects after some neighbors woke up to a disturbing scene Wednesday morning: a burning cross. 

Now, some wonder if the fiery incident was a hate crime. On Thursday, NewsWest 9 spoke with all agenices involved in the investigation.

So far, there still aren't many details about who and why someone set fire to a cross in a Midland neighborhood. However, the Fire Department, Police Department, and the FBI are all involved. NewsWest 9 is not releasing the exact location of the home for the victim's safety, however, it happen not too far from the Midland Park Mall. 

Each department or agency, while working together, still has its own focus in the investigation. Midland Police are especially looking at this case as criminal mischief. The Fire Marshal tells NewsWest 9, they accusing the suspects of illegal burning within city limits. 

NewsWest 9 also spoke with a local representive from the FBI. He said they are investigating this as a Violation of Civil Rights. 

At this point, authorities are holding back on talking about a motive. Again, they said they'll take more time to figure out the who and why. 

So far, Police say this is only incident like this reported in Midland.
