MIDLAND- It's a departure from the typical wedding venue but the new George and Laura Bush Commemorative Center, nestled near the Midland International Airport runway on the Commemorative Air Force Headquarters and Museum grounds is seeing more requests for nuptials.

"This is a hidden gem," Terri Brown with the CAF said the staff has already booked five weddings this summer and couples have already locked in dates for 2010 and 2011."[Couples] are really surprised when they walk in here to see what kind of facility we can offer them."

The Gunfighter Pub doubles as a lounge or reception area. O'Brien Hall offers a more formal setting and provides a view of the airport runway. The hanger attached to the Commemorative Center can hold up to 600 guests.

"You would be surprised. Some people who haven't been to our air shows and who haven't been to the CAF come here and want to get married here, whether they're into aviation or not," Brown said.

The money used to rent the space is cycled back into the CAF, a nonprofit organization. The new center houses the Texas Medal of Honor Memorial.
