ODESSA - More than a dozen future doctors take those final steps toward their degrees, right here in the Permian Basin.

The students completed their first two years at the main campus in Lubbock.

But now, they'll finish up their final two years at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center of the Permian Basin.

One student from the basin couldn't be happier about mixing family and school.

"I'm thrilled to have most of my family and my wife's family here and they have been a great help and making it a very easy transition to moving to Lubbock to Midland," Medical Student Martin Ortega, said.

Ortega is one of 18 students who are coming to Odessa to finish up school.
